Admissions – master level study

Conditions of acceptance and admission procedure to the master study in the academic year 2018/2019 with the beginning of the study in the academic year 2019/2020

Applicant to the master study at AFAD can become a student of the chosen study programme, only based on a completed admission procedure.  If the student has completed the bachelor study, i.e. the first level study programme, they can apply to admissions at AFAD as given by the admissions regulations. Part of the admission procedure to AFAD is the admission interview, which will be conducted on 21. 6. 2018, with the aim to examine applicant’s individual skills and abilities to independently and creatively fulfil admission requirements of the master study at AFAD, together with applicant’s orientation in the relevant field of study, quality of thinking, knowledge of art history, and art theory, as well as aesthetics.  

In case when admission interviews to AFAD are conducted before applicant’s completion of the first level study, the applicant will be accepted to the master’s degree program conditionally. Definite acceptance is possible only in case of a successful completion of the first level study programme. The applicant will submit a document of completed bachelor’s studies (bachelor’s degree) within 10 days of completion of bachelor’s studies, and no later than the enrolment closing date at AFAD. The applicant will submit a document of completed first level study programme within ten days of the first level study programme completion, but no later than the enrolment closing date at AFAD. The applicant to the master level study at AFAD can only apply to one of the following study programmes (the applicant has to specify which studio they are applying to!), accompanied by the estimated number of applicants:

Estimated numbers of admitted students are not binding.

Applicants to the master level study at AFAD will fill in and send an online application, which will be placed at the school web page to 22. 5. 2019. After that, the applicant will send printed and signed copies of application, by regular mail by 23. 5. 2019 at the latest, accompanied by the following documents:

  • CV
  • certified copy of the bachelor study diploma; In case of international diploma, official translation to Slovak is required
  • proof of payment for the admission fee
  • certified copy of documents accompanying the diploma, or a transcript of completed subjects with weighted GPA (grade point average), certified by the study department of the relevant university (applicants from other universities, not AFAD), and in case of an international document, official translation to Slovak language is required.
  • international applicants and applicants who studied abroad will, in case of being accepted to AFAD,  submit the official recognition of their education certificates/diplomas issued internationally no later than by the closing date for the enrolment to the study.

The admission interview is to examine an applicant’s level of knowledge, talent, thinking, abilities and skills in terms of specific requirements given by the chosen master’s degree program. The admission interview for master’s degree programs is conducted before an admission committee appointed by the AFAD rector for every individual study program. The committee evaluates the applicant’s individual abilities and potential to create independently and to meet requirements of the AFAD master’s degree programs, his/her knowledge of history and theory of art and aesthetics. The committee considers the achieved results in the completed bachelor’s degree program (weighed GPA).

Admission interview consists of the following parts:

  • an applicant’s portfolio presentation (a portfolio is to be either in the electronic or photographic form)
  • discussion between the committee members and the applicant for the master’s degree programs
  • portfolio and discussion evaluation.

Every member of the admission committee grades the portfolio and discussion with an applicant (in the range 0-5 points). According to the sum of the points by the individual committee members the ranking list of the applicants is created. Evaluation results and the ranking list are submitted by the admission committee to the AFAD rector who decides whether the applicant is to be admitted to the AFAD study program or not. The applicant will receive the admission decision in accordance with the law and AFAD regulations.

The course of the admission procedure and admission criteria for the study field:

History and Theory of Fine Art and Architecture

The applicant for the master’s degree program in the study field History and Praxis of Contemporary Art can become a student of the chosen study program only by succeeding in an admission procedure. If a student has completed a bachelor’s degree program, i.e. first level study program in the study field History and Theory of Fine Art and Architecture, only then s/he can apply for the admission procedure to AFAD as given in the standard procedure. The admission procedure for the study of master’s degree programs at AFAD consists of an admission interview and a writing assignment: essay or interpretation of a selected artwork or exhibition, which are elaborated by an applicant during the admission procedure.

The admission interview has a form of a discussion with an applicant whose acquired knowledge from the study field History and Theory of Fine Art and Architecture is examined together with his/her abilities, general knowledge, interests and creative potential.

In case, the admission interviews to AFAD are carried out prior to completing the bachelor’s study program, the applicant is admitted conditionally to master’s degree program. The final admission to study is conditioned by the successful completion of the first level study program. The applicant will submit the proof of completion of the bachelor’s degree program within ten day after completing the first level study program yet no later than the date of enrolment for study.

The course of the admission procedure

The admission interview for master’s degree program is conducted before the committee appointed by the AFAD rector, the committee evaluates the results of the admission interview as well as the written essay and at same time considers results of the previous studies.
