The Horror Aurum exhibition is a response to the theme of the International Biennale ŠperkStret 2018: Gold – the Aura of Rarity, an event stimulating discussion about gold as a metaphor for the value of studio jewellery. The term horror aurum offers a wide range of interpretations correlating with a great expressive potential in studio jewellery and indicates that it is not the matter of form without meaning. It reflects the search for values and meaning in today’s world overwhelmed by a variety of forms, patterns, and frenetically alternating visual information that often lacks meaningful content. The thematic exhibition reflecting the current trends in visual art and contemporary jewellery presents the works of thirteen selected art jewellers striving to achieve a certain degree of formal sophistication and the conceptual dimension of artistic production. The artists see gold from different perspectives, reflecting their personal opinions and attitudes. The jewellery pieces on display refer to gold as a value, a symbol, a metaphor, a sign, an icon, or a mystery, and many of the artists imitate, negate, and even destroy the material itself.
