Based on the invitation of AFAD I visited the Conservation and Restoration Department at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava in October 2-8th, 2017. This visit was made in the framework of the agreement on academic exchanges ERASMUS +.
During my stay, I gave a lecture to students and teachers on copying and restoration of easel oil painting and demonstrated photo and video materials. Then I conducted a master class on the preparation of the basis for painting (pulling the canvas on the stretcher, sizing the canvas) and on stretching the painting during the process of restoration on a working extensible canvas stretcher. The master class took place in the form of a live conversation. The AFAD students took an active part in the work process, during which I answered numerous questions from the audience. I also got acquainted with the structure of the Conservation and Restoration Department and methods used in the restoration and copying of paintings at AFAD. We exchanged our views with the colleagues, leading disciplines on restoration and copying in AFAD.
I want to note that the educational process at the Conservation and Restoration Department is conducted at high professional level. I liked the working atmosphere and interest of students in obtaining the knowledge.
As a result of fruitful and informal communication, we agreed that such events are mutually interesting and useful. It was suggested that such events should be held on a regular basis, as in a short time it is impossible to reflect most of the topics that need to be conveyed to the audience.
I am grateful for the hospitality of the staff of the Conservation and Restoration Department, the International Office and the leadership of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava.
I wish all colleagues and students of AFAD new successes and all the best!
