Moscow State Stroganov Academy of Industrial and Applied Arts – Type of mobility: Staff mobility for Teaching – Academic year: 2016/2017

From 1th to 8th of December 2016 within the framework of the international program Erasmus, Antonio Vilches-Nogerol, associate professor of Moscow State Stroganov Academy of Industrial and Applied Arts, visited one of the leading Eastern European university in the field of Art and Design – Academy of Fine Arts and Design (AFAD) in Bratislava.

The main goals of this trip were acquainted with traditions and peculiarities of this popular academy, the experience exchange with leading teachers of the department of industrial design and search for ways of interaction.

The first impression was a visit to School of Applied Arts. This school prepares future students for the academy, as well as specialists with secondary education. It’s obvious, that students have the high level works. Also quality infrastructure in School demonstrates effective teaching and administrative work. A lot of interesting things about this place told Lenka Seniglova, teacher of Industrial Design Studio.

The main event of the trip was a visit to AFAD and constructive cooperation with colleagues from the industrial design studio. Interesting, useful and nice communication was with the Head of the Design Department Miroslav Debnar (assoc.prof.), Head of the Industrial Design Ferdinand Chrenka (assoc. prof.) and assistant Lenka Seniglova. Colleagues have shown a lot of student’s works in the field of industrial design, which have a high level of performance, creativity and creative freedom.

Further excursion around the Academy only confirmed the initial opinion. AFAD has a strong academic basis and opens for a new experience; approach to the teaching is interdisciplinary and systemic. In additin, the works of students from different departments combine wide design thinking and high artistic culture. Academy has excellent architecture and developed infrastructure, it has everything you need for work: special equipment, good using of space, enough lighting levels; high ceilings, etc.

The great achievement of the Academy as a whole and design offices in particular is close links with the world's leading manufacturing companies. In addition to the actual practical work, students of design department have a unique experience at the intersection of conceptual and practical design in the Art Design Studio.

Antonio Vilches-Nogerol in his presentation told about new academic discipline in Stroganov Academy “Digital art and design”. Colleagues discussed the unique experience of cooperation between industrial and digital design in one project. This project was made by students of the Department of Industrial Design, professor Tatiana Litvina, associate professor Antoni o Vilches-Nogerol and project consultant Evgenia Malkova.

The final meeting was the visit to the leadership of AFAD: the Rector of the Academy Stanislav Stankoci (prof.) and the Head of International Department Nina de Gelder. We discussed prospects for further cooperation between our Academies, the similarities and differences between Academies, current problems and challenges of education in the field of design and art.

AFAD – is a great educational organization, combining the traditional and innovational approaches. The further development of cooperation will enrich and complement the activities of both sides and will be a useful experience. Thanks a lot for the good organization to the International Department and special to Veronika Selingerova.
