Student works from the AFAD nominated for the National Design Award 2023
The Slovak Design Center announced this year's nominations for the National Design Award - Product Design. We are very happy that several works made by our students from the Department of Design and doctoral student from the Department of Textiles were included in the "Student Design" category. Congratulations to all the nominees!
The National Design Award is an annual event that recognizes and celebrates the best of Slovak design. The award is given to designers who have created innovative and creative works with a significant impact on individual areas of human life, on the entire society and the environment. Also based on these criteria, the submitted works were evaluated by a seven-member international expert jury consisting of Michal Staško (SK), Mária Račeková (SK), Stefan Moritsch (AT), Valerio Lupi Cherubini (IT), Václav Mlynář (CZ), Pavel Masopust (CZ ) and Jakub Berdych (CZ).
TERRA - CUTLERY
The TERRA cutlery is a compact design created in collaboration between Studio of Industrial Design and Berndorf-Sandrik. The goal was to design cutlery that can be produced using 3D metal printing technology. The design brings to the table not only a function, but also a haptic and aesthetic experience. Various surface textures, including stone, folk costumes or plaster of buildings are intimately captured thanks to RTI (Reflectance Transformation Imaging). The structure is variable and the individual parts are stackable. Cutlery is an object that captures the value of an area or culture. It arouses user’s feelings associated with the environment and the landscape, thus contributing to a deeper connection of the person with the given values. The model is created by alternative resin printing technology with a high level of detail.
The work deals with research and practical application of foamed aluminum, a material developed by the Slovak Academy of Sciences for design practice. It consists of initial tests and the development of possible author's techniques for joining the material with the help of its foaming, followed by the specific application of these procedures into forms of interior or accessory design. Their use resulted in a series of chairs and various types of jewelry, brooches, and rings. In order to preserve the designer's autonomy and in an effort to gain the deepest possible understanding of the material and work with it, I avoid any external technologies and processes in the project. All objects were created using a hand torch or other hand tools. Tests and exams, as well as the resulting objects, are equal parts of it.
ORIGINALITY - AUTHOR'S TECHNOLOGY
Is mass individualization a sufficient answer to the rising demand for originality? The Original project resembles a production line and offers an insight into the original technology of porcelain casting. While the 3D printer produces blanks for plaster casting, the hydraulic press in the next stage breaks the plaster parts of the mold, introducing an element of chance into the process. The customer can participate in the individualization of the product by choosing the order of the individual parts of the casting mold and makes it original.
The work consists of a set of textiles, which is a temporary result of research in the field of textile dyeing with regard to social-environmental sustainability. The raw material for dyeing/printing are pigments obtained from various rocks and minerals or charcoal. These raw materials can be found in the local environment, which defines the color by its geography. The pigments are mixed with a thickener rich in vegetable proteins obtained from soy and other legumes, which ensures the transfer and fixation of the pigments on the fabric and at the same time helps to achieve richer shades. The limitation of this technology in the form of a limited color range or an often unpredictable result encourages a possible reassessment of the properties of dyed textiles, such as durability of coloring, which could contribute to prolonging the life cycle of the material.
