The Preparatory Design Course is a two-semester core subject intended for first-year students of the Department of Design. Its main purpose is to provide a general foundation in design before students continue their studies in specialized studios in higher years. The course content is focused on acquiring and developing fundamental design skills and familiarizing students with current trends in the field. Throughout the semester, students work on a main and a secondary assignment.

The methodology for the main assignment is based on the simulation or direct execution of projects (in cases of collaboration with external clients or participation in competitions) within the field of design. Students become familiar with all design phases throughout the creative process. They begin with an initial analysis and research on the given topic, followed by the design phase, which encourages invention, idea generation, and conceptualization through sketches. As needed, students present their ideas through experimental models, material tests, or artistic and technological experiments. The project work focuses on refining formal and aesthetic skills, mastering form, working with proportion and structure, all in relation to fundamental construction and technological principles. Throughout the creative process, the designs are continuously evaluated from a critical perspective, considering environmental, social, and cultural design criteria in relation to the nature of the assignments. The projects culminate in a scaled model or prototype, accompanied by a graphic presentation in the form of posters and supporting documents.

The secondary assignment aims to develop specific skills and abilities and is perceived more as a creative exercise that does not necessarily have to take the form of comprehensive projects. Alongside working on assignments, emphasis is also placed on verbal communication and presentation during consultations and final defenses. Over two semesters, students engage in a wide range of projects and are encouraged to think about design in its full breadth—from its connection to craftsmanship, through industrial design and spatial creation, to its experimental aspects.

The pedagogical methodology of the course is based on a studio-based approach, where students work on assignments through regular group and individual consultations with instructors. Additionally, the course incorporates supportive activities such as excursions and consultations with external experts, directly related to the content of the assignments.
