Photography and new media

Requirements for entrance examination. Home assignments, further details of individual tasks, necessary tools. The requirements are current for the admission procedure at Academic year 2023/2024.

Requirements for portfolio

  • collection of 20 photographic works on any subject
  • pencil drawing (or other material) 3 pieces, focused on still life – found/arranged still life or architecture – interior/exterior architectural-spatial composition. The emphasis is put on mastering drawing from life, perspective, light and composition.

Mandatory assignments:

  • self-portrait – 1 photograph
  • still lives – 3 photographs: 1 photograph of an arranged still life, 1 photograph of a found still life, 1 photograph of a still life consisting of favourite subjects, the emphasis is put on the perfect technical realization
  • collection of 7 photographs: it is possible to choose one of the following genres and reflect it on photographs: reportage or documentary
  • photographic story: an essay, a collection of 9 photographs on the following topic – The place I come from

Important: All the requirements — as far as content and extent are concerned — shall be followed precisely. Collections which are not complete will be disqualified.

How to submit works:

  • Digital version of homework - portfolio will be uploaded by the applicant after submitting the electronic application and attachments in the period from December 6, 2022 from 12 p.m. untill December 9, 2022 by 8 a.m. via the website: https://ulozisko.vsvu.sk/; access data and instructions will be sent to the email addresses listed in the application no later than 12 p.m. on 6 December 2022. The portfolio must be included in one joint PDF format (maximum up to 20 MB) titled as name_surname_study photography and other media. Individual works must be marked.
  • The applicant brings the original versions of his/her portfolio directly to the second round of the admissions procedure,
  • It should be printed digitally or processed by other photographic technology, the minimum size of photographs is 18 x 24 cm (or A4), the maximum size of photographs is 50 x 60 cm (or A2), the original of a drawing in A3 size (not a digital print).

Further details of individual tasks during the admission procedure:

1st round

  • by the distance method, without the applicant’s physical presence
  • assessment of all portfolio components listed in homework requirements (portfolio)
  • evaluation of the mandatory assignments

2nd round

  • in person, with the participation of the applicant who passes to the second round from the 1st round. The second round of the admissions procedure lasts for two days.
  • taking photos according to the given topics by a digital process (approx. 4 assignments)
  • an interview with the applicant in front of the admissions committee, where the applicant demonstrates his knowledge of the field he is applying for; part of the interview is also a discussion about homework and photography tasks in the 2nd round. Part of the interview is aimed at finding out an overall overview of the high school curriculum in history, literature, history of visual arts and orientation in contemporary art and socio-cultural overview. It is evaluated separately by two members of the commission designated for this part of the admission interviews from among internal and external teachers of the Department of Theory and History of Art. Applicants from abroad will be allowed to complete the interview in English, but in the case of successful acceptance, they will continue their studies in the Slovak language (minimum level B1 is required)..
