Requirements for portfolio
The applicant submits assignments in 3 sections:
- A – Home assignment on a given topic. A textual description of the solution and motivation for the completed assignment should be attached. (max. 300 words)
- B – Video application
- C – Portfolio (approx. 10 works)
A – Home assignment:
Interface is a contact spot of two words. For example: the digital world meets the physical world on the interface of a display, the ocean and land meet in the interface of a rising level of the water, the fence on the border is an interface between two cultures... The applicant decides on the context he/she exploits the theme in, and the way he/she interprets the term interface.
He/she can choose from various forms how to embrace the theme, then he/she selects the one he/she prefers and processes it according to the specified extent:
- Architectural design Submission of the design in the form of sketches and/or a 3D model. 3D model is rendered into images or a video.
- Intervention into public space Design in the form of sketches or a 3D model (see Architectural design) or a photomontage with the real space. If it is an already realized activity, its documentation should be also submitted (photo, video).
- Photo collage, photo series Pictures should be submitted.
- Virtual or augmented reality Textual presentation of the application’s functionality, sketches of the visual identity. The real implementation in the form of an executable application is also an option.
- Video game. Submission of Art Design Document and Game Design Document in case of a design or executable application of the game has already been implemented.
- Video animation. Video file with a duration of maximum 10 minutes.
- Infographics. Static images and/or a PDF presentation and/or interactive online visualization
- Interactive installation in space. Design elaborated in the form of sketches or a digital 3D model accompanied with functionality design of the installation and its interaction with a visitor.
- Others. The extend and form of the work of a different type, should be consulted individually.
B – Video application
Short video about the applicant and his/her motivation to study digital arts in a duration of maximum 3 minutes. File format MP4, maximal resolution 1920x1080. Video application itself will not be evaluated, its primary purpose is to introduce the applicant to the committee.
C – Portfolio
Submission of the selection of works (approx. 10 works). Suitable media are: drawing and painting (also digital forms), photography, video, animation, 3D modelling, infographics and data visualization, architecture, graphic design, web design, computer applications and games, user interfaces, performance, installation, social activism, online marketing. These works can be also presented as proposals for projects.
Technical requirements concerning formats:
The portfolio is submitted in one PDF file in which every work is presented on the individual page (or more pages) together with a title and short annotation to the work. Each work is accompanied with at least one picture (or photograph, screenshot, render, etc.). If the work already exists, hyperlink should be attached to the annotation. Pages in the file have a width orientation (1920 x 1080 pixels or 297x210mm)
If the portfolio contains videos or animations, they must be uploaded in a single video file as consecutive segments.
Pictures, photographs, graphic design: JPEG or PDF format. The screen with the title and applicant´s name or a short annotation should precede every segment. File MP4 format, maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080.
If the portfolio also contains video programs, demos or games, they are to be submitted in an executable form for the Windows or Mac platform, packed in a ZIP file.
How to submit works:
- After submitting the electronic application with annexes, the applicant uploads 3 files from all three sections (home assignment, video and portfolio), in the period between December 7, 2021 (from 12 a.m.) and December 10, 2021 (to 8 a.m.) via: https://ulozisko.vsvu.sk/
- Access details and instructions will be sent no later than December 7, 2021 (to 12 a.m.) by e-mail to the addresses stated in the application.
- The applicant uploads all files in required formats titled name_surname_study programme digital arts. Individual works must be marked.
Further details of individual tasks during the admissions procedure:
- by the distance method, without the applicant’s physical presence
- the evaluation of home assignments, video application, portfolio
- in person, with the participation of the applicant who passes to the second round from the first round. The second round of the admissions procedure lasts for two days.
- working on creative assignments specified by the committee. For example, a drawing representation of a given story, ideas behind functionality design and graphic design of a mobile application’s user interface, a logo design or a campaign on a given topic...
- test focused on measuring the general secondary-school knowledge of history, literature, fine art history and the knowledge of contemporary art. If requested, it is possible for the applicants from abroad to take the test in English language. However, if they are admitted to study at AFAD, the studies continue in Slovak language.
- The applicant showcases his/her knowledge of the field in the interview before the admissions committee, the interview also includes a discussion about his/her portfolio).
- During the interview the applicant is asked about his/her interests outside of school, his/her favourite books, films and video games. The committee is interested in what has spoken to the applicant in arts, culture or social events, or which authors he/she finds inspiring and why.
