Each year, Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (AFAD) presents the best Master-degree diploma works of its graduates. Being the oldest arts-related educational institution in Slovakia specialising in visual arts – fine arts, design, architecture and restoration – AFAD strives to inform the widest possible ranks of general public about the fruits of its mission. Its education approaches and methods had undergone various changes and developments that have significantly influenced, each during its own period, the artistic way of thinking or the authorial approach not only of students and teachers, but also those of artists active outside the academic realm. Alongside other existing arts-oriented universities that were established in Slovakia, AFAD remains the pivotal educational institution that substantially shapes not just our domestic arts scene, as its graduates are able to successfully establish themselves also abroad. Until recently, this annual presentation of the best master-degree works was held in the galleries and exhibition halls of AFAD’s hometown. For the first time, this year the selected student works will be presented to audiences in the Orava Gallery. For our emerging artists, who are just entering the fine-arts scene, this offers a great opportunity to exhibit in a gallery famous for its professional presentations and high popularity among the public.
This year’s selection of diploma works focused on areas of the free art, represented by our departments of painting, printmaking, book illustration, photography, sculpture, and glass. Thus, Deana Kolenčíková (Department of Photography), Michal Lacko (Department of Applied Art), Kristína Kubáňová (Department of Printmaking And Other Media), Jakub Jenčo (Department of Printmaking And Other Media), Emil Malecký (Sculpture, Object, Installation) and Žofia Dubová (Department of Painting) reach out beyond the university gates and enter the real realm of art. For now, they do so on the premises of the Orava Gallery in Dolný Kubín.
