Preparatory courses for the 1st year

Preparatory Course in Graphic Design
Asst. Prof. Peter Nosáľ, MFA

AThe aim of the course is to introduce students studying various vocational fields to the issue of the graphic design, to clarify in particular the nature of thought in design and also to familiarise them with the possibilities of the graphical rendering of ideas. The aim is also to achieve a link to their own field of study – confronting graphic design.

Main subject – STUDIO (practice based creative studio work)

Graphic Design Studio I
Asst. Prof. Július Nagy, MFA

BA level: In undergraduate study the student should gradually gain knowledge and skills from the field of graphic design and visual communication – from the creation of logotype through the creation of a corporate identity to various applications such as posters, brochures, product packaging, etc. It is expected that the student will also acquire experience from specific fields of graphic design: font creation, book design, web design, adverts, etc. Semester work consists of given themes and short-term assigned topics.

MA level: The concept of the tuition is aimed at covering the realisation of more complex projects, requiring the acceptance of realistic conditions based on practice. The second aspect of the graduate study may be aimed at specialisation in a field of graphic design, in which there is expected excellent handling of the specific specialisation which the student has selected.

Graphic Design Studio II
Prof. Stanislav Stankoci, MFA

BA level: The aim of the undergraduate level of study is to understand and acquire the basic principles of visual communication and the role of graphic design in creating visual communication. For undergraduates, tasks for the 3rd – 7th semesters are conceived in the form of a scope of 2-3 smaller and 1-2 larger study assignments per semester, allowing a broader spectrum of work to be drawn upon in the field of graphic design in a visual-communication space. In the 8th semester the student shall undertake a bachelor diploma work in the form of an extensive project, which is completed with a presentation and oral defence of the work.

MA level: Graduate students are assigned tasks in the 9th and 10th semesters only following consultation with the tutor in the form of a closed research study project, which allows them greater room to concentrate on a specific field of graphic design, or visual communication, also with the possibility of application for a specific user interface in practice. In the 11th and 12th semesters students, following agreement with their tutor, independently undertake their own artistic project as a graduate diploma work.

Graphic Design Studio III
Assoc. Prof. Pavel Choma, MFA

BA level: The basic axis of the study programme is to teach students the forms of graphic design in applications for basic production (the brand, book, bulletin, poster, website, multimedia, animation…) and contact with advertising. Tasks are set so that students become cognisant with the commercial graphics field. Concurrent to this, tasks are assigned transcending the known borders of graphic design structures, in particular in the field of the relationship to architecture and the urban interior.

MA level: In graduate study students are motivated by such activity enabling them to deepen their individual expression. In one or two semesters they deal with the application of graphic design in architecture. The student completes the study with a diploma work, proving him/herself as a future specialist, sufficiently self-confident and a professional in the field of graphic design.

Compulsory vocational subjects

Drawing
Asst. Prof. Svätopluk Mikyta, MFA

The aim of the training is to handle classic composition and proportion of the live model and the development of student’s own creative view, with the possibility of diverging from classicist depiction. Subject curriculum: figure drawing as a complex school of vision, the ability to see reality and depict it on a surface. The drawing of the human figure according to a live model is prevalent, but includes also drawing of the human skeleton and plaster copies or drawing of landscapes and architecture.

Classical Creative and Graphic Techniques
Asst. Prof. Svätopluk Mikyta, MFA

Students are gradually taught classic technique of painting and graphic techniques and their application in graphic design. Students undertake topics progressively in the individual design techniques. The teaching also comprises computer work, the sufficient processing of basic design works.

Practical Typography
Eva Brezinová MFA

Multimedia
Peter Huba, MFA

Web design
Peter Huba, MFA

Úvod do problematiky tvorby webových stránok. Študenti sa zoznamujú so základnými technikami a postupmi pri tvorbe stránok, napr. Project management, Komunikácia s klientom, HTML, CSS atď.

Povinne – voliteľné predmety určené katedrou vizuálnej komunikácie

Typography Laboratory
Ass. Pavol Bálik, MFA

A series of lectures on the development and forms of Latin lettering from mediaeval times to the present day. In the first year students discuss the history of lettering and typography, perform exercises in the Roman capital letter and studies according to a model. In the second year students are taught the theory of typographic detail, digital photography theory, typographic rendering and artistic design.

Multimedia Laboratory
Ass. Ján Šicko, MFA

The subject creates a background for acquiring skills in computer graphics programs and creative thought in digital and electronic media. Linking graphic design with mastering computer programs. An important part is also the technical preparation, or at least informedness, on the possibilities of multimedia.
