Preparatory courses for the 1st year
Preparatory Course in Textiles and Design
Asst. Prof. Blanka Cepková, MFA
The role of the textile course is to familiarise students with textile material as a creative medium, with the help of which they can develop their planar as well as spatial feeling. They are taught the texture and structure of material, with its colour effect and textile techniques, which are directly connected with the given material.
Main subject – STUDIO (practice based creative studio work)
Free Textile Work Studio
Asst. Prof. Ľuba Sajkalová, MFA
BA level: The concept of undergraduate study begins not only with the acquisition of thread weaves, but mainly in returning to old forgotten textile techniques. Interpretation of knowledge in a completely new form – textile jewellery or three-dimensional objects – this is the aim of the topics in the first year in the studio. In the following year there follows an individual choice of a fragment for realising a copy of a historical textile, which requires a student’s orientation in textile history and manual and aesthetic demands. A compulsory programme of the studio over the course of the five years of study is also the restoration of historical textiles.
MA level: The graduate study is based on learning from restoration research, from contact with fragile materials of ancient origin. It aims at seeking material paraphrases, reinterpretation into other inventive and time forms of creative interventions and spatial installations.
Fashion Design Studio
Assoc. Prof. Júlia Sabová, MFA
BA level: Clothing is in its essence a three-dimensional object based on the plane (cut or material), which has the possibility to become “sculpture” with its own language. Therefore our effort is to lead students towards expressing their own, independent, subjective expression. Students learn to seek and mainly find a deeper philosophical dimension of clothing design. This means elevating clothing design to a free creative discipline. In the first years of undergraduate study assignments are conceived with the aim of teaching tailoring technology, cutting and construction skills.
MA level: According to possibilities, students are provided with a study stay abroad in the framework of exchange stays or practice in a Slovak or foreign firm, in a fashion studio, possibly in a textile business. Themes are individual, they respond to a certain situation and possibilities. The diploma graduate work is mostly realised in cooperation with industry. It forms an integrated collection with its own philosophy and precise consumer orientation. An important component of the oral defence of the work is theoretical and historical knowledge of the theme processed.
Studio of Textile Design
Asst. Prof. Mária Fulková, MFA
BA level: A graduate of this studio should be independent in thinking, creative, a professional textile designer, able to apply him/herself in practice, orienting him/herself in the latest trends of textile design, managing also to create new trends. The student must master the whole process of the textile’s creation from the initial idea through to the final realisation, whether artistic or industrial. The student solves all types of utility textiles from handkerchiefs through to the textile solution of architectural space or textile furniture.
MA level: Students independently and individually set their programme, working on their own projects. Supplementary activities: regular internships at designer centres of factories, workshops, excursions, ongoing invitation of interesting guests.
Compulsory vocational subjects
Drawing (Figure Drawing),
Assoc. Prof. Stanislav Bubán, MFA.
The subject covers the mastering of classic composition and proportion of the model displayed and mastering of the student’s own creative view with the possibility of diverging from classicist depiction. Subject curriculum: figure drawing as a complex school of vision, the ability to see reality and depict it on a surface. Drawing of the human figure according to a live model is prevalent, though also includes drawing of the human skeleton and plaster copies or drawing of landscapes and architecture.
Basics of Painting / Theory of Colours
Assoc. Prof. Stanislav Bubán, MFA
The subject presents the theory of colours and by means of assignments the student is honed in painting techniques. The subject should provide instruction as to the possibility of applying painting in the textile assignments of individual studios.
Old Textile Techniques
PhDr. Juraj Zajonc, CSc.
A deepening of the theoretical knowledge of individual traditional textile techniques, acquisition of practical skills from the technology of manual textile techniques and their creative application, acquisition of the ability to identify textile techniques and create replicas of the structures and textiles using them.
History of Textile Techniques
PhDr. Juraj Zajonc, CSc.
The subject provides a comprehensive cultural-historical view on the main groups of manually rendered textile – felt, knitted, woven, warp knitted textile – as a component of the traditional textile culture of Europe, with a focus on Slovakia. The subject deals with textile culture from the earliest times through to the present day in all social layers (period and folk textile) and subcultures (sacred – profane textiles, textiles of ethnic, religious and other groups).
Workshop I. Manual Printing,
Asst. Prof. Mária Fulková, MFA, Ass. Beata Gerbócová, MFA
Students are taught the basics of manual printing, blueprint technique, template printing, stencil printing, film printing and with production of templates for individual manual printing techniques.
Workshop II. - Basics of Needlecraft
Assoc. Prof. Júlia Sabová, MFA, Dagmar Hilbertová
The student is taught the basics of needlecraft and work on the sewing machines, emphasis being placed on the ability to elaborate technical details in work with textile materials. The result should be the creation of a small functional object (a pocket, cover…).
Workshop III.- Basics of Weaves, Weaving
Assoc. Prof. Julia Sabová, MFA, Karol Hronček
The student learns basic textile screen-weaving, twill, atlas and their derivatives. The subject includes weaving on a frame and weaving on looms, spooling and spinning the warp. Drawing of the template for the fabric pattern, weaving tests.
Workshop IV. – Knitting
Nikoleta Pišová, MFA
By way of exercises the subject provides for the acquisition of skills in mastering work on the knitting machines, orientation in the possibilities of knitting by machine, transparent, structural, colour weaves.
Construction of Design Cuts
Assoc. Prof. Júlia Sabová, MFA, Dagmar Hilbertová
Lectures and exercises are aimed at mastering the basic principles of constructing design cuts. On the simplest forms of clothing the student clearly sees the relationship between the measured object (the human figure), mathematical calculation and depiction in a plane. Gradually more complex forms of cuts are solved through to a design experiment with a basic given shape.
Clothing Stylisation of Drawing
Ass. Barbora Cigánová, MFA
The role of the subject is that the student masters a diverse range of individual styling in drawing. Students gain skills in various techniques, methods as well as knowledge of the characteristic clothing styles. Emphasis is placed on the extensive realisation of fashion and clothing studies. These studies should show the significant differentiation of various textile and non-textile materials, as well as cut structures of arranged clothing.
Modelling and Clothing Technology
Assoc. Prof. Júlia Sabová, MFA, Dagmar Hilbertová
The aim of the subject is that the student acquires and develops tailoring skills for mastering the semester work. Technical realisation of objects.
Specific Computer Preparation
Soňa Sadílková, MFA
In the framework of exercises students acquire practical information on using the software COREL DRAW, PHOTOSHOP. Under professional creative guidance they learn to differentiate the borders between art created with the aid of computer programs and simply the skilful use of possibilities provided by the programmes.
The subject provides an introduction to basic computer programs.
Computer Programs
Soňa Sadílková, MFA
The subject provides an introduction to basic computer programs.
Elective subjects
Textile Restoration
Asst. Prof. Sylvia Birkušová, MFA
The subject comprises study of historical fabrics, learning about the fine-drawing of fabrics, their cleaning and an understanding of the reason for their disintegration. Individual tasks are realised directly on collection objects borrowed from museums. Emphasis is placed on the investigation procedure, creative and technical mastering of how to most faithfully preserve the collection objects – accompanied by restorer documentation.
Basics of conservation of old textiles
Asst. Prof. Sylvia Birkušová , MFA
