Project RE:action / RE:(per)formance / RE:activation / Recreation by Lenka L. Lukačovičová is neither performance nor photography, it is photography for performance or performance only for photography where the only condition is the pressing the trigger. This is a long-term project of this artist, a series of interpretations of notable action artists (non-photographers and one photographer) – Rudo Sikora, Ľubomír Ďurček, Vladimír Kordoš and Ľubo Stacho from the 1970’s and 80’s in Slovakia. Her Re-interpretations are also a RE-action to some breakthrough social phenomena or social situations we meet every day and are characteristic to our society as if some symptoms emerge again and again. A similar model of variation with the use of repetition is characteristic to contemporary visual art and culture where it is presented within the whole scale of variation methods, remake, remix, repetition, recombination etc. and is often linked to contemporary symptoms of post-production.
Through the infinite number of potential metamorphosis such as how to work further with the starting point (model) by taking over its basic features and their further mixing, very impressive and sophisticated ways of replacing are created within the mix of different media and genres. The statements penetrating the media are also based on ephemeral presentations bound for a certain period, while the narrative scheme remains essentially the same. Let us be reminded of the repetition of significant performance by Marina Abramovič (Seven Easy Pieces, New York, 2005), in approaching the performances of colleagues those influenced her. Of course, a “re-performer” needs the approval of the original author, too. However, historical performances have become public again, and even in an intermediated form, they have been revived to significant reception.
The Project RE: (per)formance by Lukačovičová is also based on documentation of photographic performances, and is primarily a part of such art as a free expression of open communication over decades. Lenka repeats photo-performances in new contexts, and becomes their sole featured heroine. Her works are as if they were an alternative staging and survival of the significant original photographed events. She also examines whether photography as a static media - as a set of frames from live performance - is able to preserve the value recalled by the given event/action after a certain period of time.
Lenka tries to search whether this action can be revived and reinterpreted in new contexts with some updated shift in the spirit of fine persiflage of original meaning. As if she verified to what extent the new photo could absorb the original content of the performance so that it could be still recognizable. Therefore, her records of the performances to be realized by herself as the author, are dived into the so-called print washer, while they metaphorically suggest the time-lapse of the interpretations and reinterpretations in which the works are being modified while “washing” their original meaning.
