Short history of the Department
Eventhough the education of graphic design at AFAD has more than 50 year tradition, the Department of Visual Communication (formerly Department of Graphic Design) as an autonomous education unit was established in 1999 when separated from the Department of Design. Prof. Ľubomír Longauer, the initiator of its establishment played a key role in its early years of existence. After his departure from the Academy in 2001, the chairmanship of the Department was handed over to prof. Stanislav Stankoci and in 2007 doc. Pavel Choma became a new Department´s chairman.
Structure of the Department and its study programmes
Today the Department offers education in study programmes of the field of study 2.2.6 Design. The teaching process of the Department is provided within the following education units: Preparation course of graphic design (for 1st year of study at the bachelor´s level), Studio of Graphic Design I, Studio of Graphic design II and Laboratory of Typography, Studio of Design III and Laboratory of Multimedia (for all other years of study at all three levels of study). Drawing, graphic programmes I – II, writing and typography I – IV, multimedia I-III, webdesign, interpretation in graphic design, practice in graphic design I-II are the compulsory specialized subjects of the Department´s curricula. The Department offers wide range of other compulsory optional subjects and optional subjects.
There are approximately 70 students enrolled in all three levels of study at the Department of Visual Communication every year. Accredited study programmes of the field of study 2.2.6 Design are the following:
- first - Bachelor´s Level of Study (Bachelor – Bc.): study programme Visual Communication, duration of study is 4 years by default
- second – Master´s Level of Study (Master of Art – Mgr. art.): study programme Design, duration of study is 2 years by default, provided that the student graduated first-level study in the study programme Design
- third – Doctoral Level of Study (Artis Doctor – ArtD.): study programme Design, duration of study: 3 years by default in internal study and no more than 5 years in external study.
Basic criteria required for the study
The basic criteria required for the study enrollment are talent and the ability to think in media range of the visual communication. Their level is tested during the enrollment examination.
Development of talent, analytical and critical thinking and mastering of communication visual means of expression (work with text, graphic character, drawing, illustration, photography, graphic or other artistic material, multimedia, etc.) are elementary requirements for a succesful study at the Department. The focus is also put on craft skills of the students and their ability to process these materials technically and technologically and to use them analogue or digitally in visual communication.
Mission and objectives of the study
The mission of the study is to educate students complexly in accredited study programmes and to prepare them for professional activities in any area of visual communication, either in practice or in research of these areas. Following the European Qualifications Framework, the priority obejctives of the study are the following:
- mastering of knowledge which is understood as a set of facts, principles, theories and procedures related to the study or work in the area of the visual communication
- gaining skills in implementing of own creative procedures aimed at solving professional issues and completing tasks, that is to say at the synergy of logic, intuition and creative thinking with practical procedures (including manual skills and utilisation of methods, materials, means and tools)
- acquiring capacities, that is abilities to use knowledge, skills and mothodological procedures in working, research or study conditions according to the principles of professional responsibility and independence.
Design and visual communication have become strategic human activitiies, that significantly influence the development of today´s society. They humanize the social environment, improve the culture of work and life of people. They are essential for the cultural maturity of every human society. The daily need for them in the entire media range imposes in surprisingly rapid pace demanding requirements on quality of the level of communication– visual form and content of the information flow, efficiency of its directing and technological maturity of the application. These criteria are crucially determining not only for the methods, nature and flexibility of the teaching process, but also for the definition of the outcomes of the study in the studios and laboratories of the Department – i.e. definition of the professional profile and further versatility of the graduates at all levels in professional practice.
Profile and versatility of graduates
The outcome of the study is a graduate – creative and morally strong personality, intellectually and professionally ready to work in the area of graphic design and visual communication, prepared to cope with tasks, projects and challenges occuring in commercial, research or educational environment.
The graduates of bachelor´s level of study gain theoretical and practical knowledge that prepare them for independent completion of tasks and coping with issues in the area of graphic design and visual communication in creative, technological and material terms, or they can continue in subsequent studies.
The graduates of the master´s level of study are fully trained (theoretically and practically) to work independently in their area at the interdisciplinary level, they are able to suggest their own solutions of the concepts of communication strategies and products in accordance with the requirements of the client and expectations of the recipient. They are ready to lead and manage creative teams or to continue in subsequent studies. After graduating in Supplementary Pedagogical Study they can work as teachers of specialized subjects.
The graduates of doctoral level of study are theoretically and practically prepared to specialized creation in their professional area, they are ready to work in the area of research and publish results of their research, they can critically evaluate works in the area of graphic design and visual communication, they are qualified to contribute to the development of education in their field of study.
